Artist's Description

Illustration from De Motu Animalium (On Animal Motion, 1680) by Alfonso Borelli (1608-1679). Borelli studied and illustrated the biomechanics of the living body as a system of levers, pistons and pivots. This image shows how the human body centers and suspends a load by a system of levers under tension from muscles and tendons.
