Artist's Description

Francisella tularensis bacteria, the cause of Tularemia, an infectious fatal disease of wild rodents. Because the clinical profile is similar to that of the plague and the disease often affects rabbits, it is also known as Rabbit Fever. Other names include Rodent Plague, Lemming Fever, and Deer Fly Fever. The disease can be transmitted to humans. During World War II, there was an epidemic on the the Eastern Front, with more than one hundred thousand infections. The former Soviet bioweapons researcher Ken Alibek suspected that the epidemic was the result of an operation using Francisella tularensis as a biological weapon. In the 1950s and 1960s, the U.S. military developed weapons that would spread the bacteria as an aerosol. Scanning Electron Microscope, magnification 30.0001 (for image size 12x10cm).
