Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) mother and baby. The South American Giant Anteater is about the size of a German Shepherd dog, and it is the largest species of anteater. A solitary animal that feeds mainly on ants and termites, and other insects. It has no teeth. In the wild it is nocturnal when near human settlements, and diurnal elsewhere. While it stays mainly on dry ground, it is a strong and capable swimmer. Due to habitat destruction it is listed as vulnerable. They are hunted for the meat and for trophies.
