Description
Scanning electron micrograph of a kidney, showing glomerulus (human). The kidney is the filter organ of the body. The picture shows the finest structures of a kidney corpus (Malpighi body) from the renal cortex. In these vessels, the urinary substances (waste products of the metabolism) are separated from the blood. Several labyrinthine entangled cells surround a blood vessel. This "filter" passes molecules down to the size of a sugar molecule and delivers the remaining "wastewater" through the renal tubules of the bladder. The regulation of the water and electrolyte balance of the body and the production of renal hormones (prostaglandin, renin, erythropoietin, vitamin D3, kinin) takes place in the kidney. Magnification 460x (at 15x12cm image size).
