Mrs. Motte presents her bow and arrows, May 12, 1781. This gesture became a legendary patriotic act during the American Revolutionary War. Told that the Patriots wished to burn her mansion down in order to oust the enemy British who were garrisoned there, Rebecca Motte happily accepted the plan, and even handed over own set of bow and arrows. The Siege of Fort Motte ended in a victory for the Patriots.
