Artist's Description

Color-enhanced Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of wheat leaf stomata. Stomata are responsible for gas exchange to and from the plant. These structures are most often found on either side of a monocot's leaf. There are guard cells on each side of the opening that allow or prevent the entrance of gas and water, based on the needs of the plant. Stomata prevent excess evaporation (water loss) and gas exchange when the plant doesn't need it. Image width 218 micrometers. Magnification 459x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
