Description
Atlas moth (Attacus atlas). Freshly hatched male sitting on cocoon on Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). Note the delicate, feathery antenna of this male. The antenna of the female are narrower. The Atlas Moth is a member of the Saturniidae family and is often considered the largest moth in the world. It is actually not the largest moth, but it is one of several species that are the largest in terms of wingspan and wing surface area. This species is found widespread throughout Asia, in China, Thailand and the subcontinent of India. They are found in lowland and upland tropical rainforest habitats.
