Artist's Description

This image shows a part of the cochlea's coil, with the stereovilli of the organ of Corti. The three rows of the outer hair cells (OHC with Stereocilia or Stereovilli, yellow/white) are clearly visible as the tectorial membrane, which usually is connected with the tips of the stereocilia has lifted up during preparation. Some of the inner hair cells (IHC) still have contact to the tectorial membrane. On top to right, one can see the Reissner membrane (bright reddish). The outermost area, left are the Hensen cells, here colored red. The ear of all mammals consists of the auricle with the external ear canal, the middle ear behind the eardrum with the ossicles which are connected to the "oval window" and make the transition to the fluid-filled inner ear with the cochlea and organ of balance. The organ of Corti lies in the entire length of the cochlea.
