Herpes simplex viruses. Colored Transmision Electron Micrograph (TEM) of herpes simplex virus particles. The viruses are colored red with their core of DNA genetic material seen. They are among the contents of an infected cell. Herpes simplex exists in two general forms type I is associated with oral cold sore infections, and type II with genital herpes infections. Herpes simplex is one of the most common viral parasites in humans yet there is no cure. They cause small, fluid-filled blisters which, if touched, can spread the virus. The blisters occur on the mouth or genitalia and may persist for weeks. Antiviral drugs may be helpful. Magnification x52,000 at 5x7cm size. x26,000 at 35mm size.
