Description
High-speed flash image of a praying mantis, Mantis religiosa, in flight. Here the two pairs of wings are seen extended and in action; the compound eyes on the head of the mantis, and its segmented antennae are visible. The praying mantis is so called for its predatory posture in the resting position, the spined femur and tibia of the forelimbs are folded together and held close to the thorax in a praying position. In one twentieth of a second the forelimbs are opened and extended forward to catch its prey which is then firmly secured by sharp spines.
