Description
Salmonella typhimurium (S. enterica, serovar Typhimurium) DT 104 bacteria cause an increasing number of foodborne infections in humans. Comminuted meat products such as sausages and hamburgers are the main sources of food poisoning. The bacteria are resistant to a wide range of antibiotics and a relatively high mortality (3 percent) has been found in the elderly. This DT 104 pathogen spreads in the cattle, pigs, sheep, and chickens from farm to farm by water and is difficult to eradicate because the bacteria survive in dry as well as wet environments. Dogs and cats can also become infected. (Enhanced SEM, microscope magnification 13,000x, image width 9.85 micrometers, bar 2 micrometers)
