Artist's Description

Scanning electron micrograph of a T lymphocyte, or T cell for short, a white blood cell that serves the immune system. T lymphocytes together with the B lymphocytes represent the acquired (adaptive) immune response. The T in the name stands for the thymus in which the cells mature. Like all blood cells, T cells are produced in the bone marrow. From there they migrate to the thymus, where MHC receptors are formed on their surface. As a result, they are able to recognize foreign proteins and, if necessary, initiate their activation. In the case of activation, the cells can differentiate in various ways depending on the origin of the foreign protein. Magnification 15,000x (at 15 cm image width).
