Description
Sperm in the oviduct. Colored Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a group of human sperm on the inner surface of the female oviduct. Each sperm (yellow) has a rounded head and a long tail which is used for movement. The sperm heads appear buried in the grass-like ciliated epithelium (pink) of the oviduct. Beating of these cilia in the oviduct help to propel the female egg from the ovary into the uterus (womb). In this way the cilia aid in moving the egg towards the sperm for fertilization, while the sperm swim towards the egg. Millions of sperm make this journey towards the egg, but only one sperm can succeed in fertilizing it.
