Blinded Sphinx (Paonias excaetus) 5th instar larva on Wild Cherry (Prunus serontina) This species can be quite variable with some caterpillars showing little or no red while others display large amounts of red. Sphinx moth larva can be found in a resting and/or feeding in a wide variety of positions but most often they hand downward from a leaf or plant stem. This species feeds on an incredible number of different species of trees and shrubs. Often it develops local preferences. This transcontinental species is found throughout the eastern US and Canada west to the rockies and Arizona. This larva was photographed in Pennsylvania in late summer.
