Artist's Description

Antoinette at the Temple Prison. Marie Antoinette (November 2, 1755 - October 16, 1793) was the last queen of France before the French Revolution. The French people disliked her, accusing her of being profligate, promiscuous, harboring sympathies for France's perceived enemies and her children of being illegitimate. She became known as Madame Déficit because the country's financial crisis was blamed on her lavish spending. Louis XVI was deposed and the monarchy abolished in 1792 and the royal family was imprisoned at the Temple Prison. Marie Antoinette was tried by the Revolutionary Tribunal, convicted of high treason, and executed by guillotine in 1793. Alexandre Kucharski, 1815 (cropped and cleaned).
