Description
This scanning electron micrograph shows the fungus Fusarium oyxsporum f. sp. cubense (blueish), within a sectioned pseudostem of an infected cavendish banana plant. The section also shows vascular bundles (grey) and starch grains (beige) in the banana pseudostem. Fusarium oxysporum is the causal agent of the Panama disease of bananas. Cavendish bananas are resistant to the Race 1 but extremely susceptible to the Tropical Race 4 (TR4). TR4 is spreading and has been reported in 2019 for the first time in the American continent where major banana producers are located. TR4 threatens global banana production. The infected banana stem was provided by the researcher Fernando Garcia-Bastidas who does research at Keygene and Wageningen University. Scanning electron microscope, magnification 1201 (at 15 cm image width).
