Description
Cross section through a human tongue. A fungiform papillae can be seen at top of image, surrounded by a deep trench. Its surface is covered by a multilayered, squamous epithelium (bright red). Taste buds (light spots) lie in the lateral papilla walls that border the trenches. The connective tissue underneath is colored blue here, and there are large numbers of mucous glands (pink) in it. In the lower half of the image, muscle fibers in different orientations can be seen. Light microscope, bright field, magnification 40x (when long side is 15cm).
