Description
Housefly (Musca domestica). SEM of the common housefly, which is a creature that is closely tied to human living spaces. They range from Greenland to Africa to Australia. The larvae grow in dung or decomposing food (compost) in about 1 week. Their life cycle lasts 2-3 weeks. When feeding, houseflies are not concerned about the differences between human feces and food, and, for this reason, the housefly is responsible for the spread of many pathogens. In the 1950's, DDT was used to control houseflies, and, naturally, given their short life cycle, they quickly built up resistance to the chemical. Magnification = 11x.
