Description
The outer layer of a surgical mask, face mask or FFP mask is made of spunbond synthetic fiber fleece. This spunbond is made from endless polymer fibers (usually polypropylene). The fleece seen here was hot fused for stabilization, which is known as thermobond (compressed areas). In surgical or FFP masks, the spunbond covers the much finer filter fleece. This inner layer consists of very fine meltblown fibers and absorbs particles from the breath or supply air. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people were advised to wear such masks when they came into contact with other people. Scanning electron micrograph, magnification 50x (at 15 cm image width).
