Artist's Description

This page from an 11th century Arabic book of herbs shows agrimony, a plant used to ease sore gums and throats, stop bleeding, and treat ailments of the stomach, liver and gallbladder. The book catalogs 600 plants and is derived from the Greek text De Materia Medica, which was compiled in the 1st century AD by Pedanius Dioscorides, an army doctor, who studied the plants of many regions. Many Greek and Roman texts that would have been lost forever were preserved in Arabic translations.
