Born out of wedlock and raised in the West Indies, he was orphaned at the age of 11. He was sponsored by people from his community to go to the North American mainland for his education. He served in the American Revolutionary War. He became aide-de-camp to General Washington. After the war he was elected to the Continental Congress from New York. He resigned to practice law and founded the Bank of New York. He wrote 51 of the 85 installments of the Federalist Papers, which supported the new constitution and to this day is the single most important source for Constitutional interpretation.
