The more than seven hundred movement studies in Muybridge's Animal Locomotion series range from methodical investigations of the torqued actions of men, women, and a veritable bestiary to compendia of the more banal actions of daily life. Progenitors of filmic technology, Muybridge's sequences, often reconfigured for legibility rather than strict accuracy, were intended both for scientific scrutiny and artistic investigation. Image taken 1883-86, printed 1887. Eadweard James Muybridge (April 9, 1830 - May 8, 1904) was an English photographer important for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion and in motion-picture projection.
