Artist's Description

Blue-green algae, cyanobacteria, is on of earth’s oldest organisms. As the name suggests, it is actually a bacteria and dates back 3.5 billion years. Exposure to this bacteria can cause gastrointestinal problems and has been reportedly linked to ALS, Alzeiheimers Disease and cancerous tumors of the liver. Currently, this bloom covers up to 90% of Lake Okeechobee in Florida. It was caused by heavy spring rains mixing with fertilizer runoff from surrounding farmlands. It will recede as weather cools.
