Description
Entitled "An Ayurvedic medical practitioner taking the pulse." One work in a series showing trades and occupations of India, 1825. Ayurveda is a system of medicine with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. The main classical Ayurveda treatises begin with legendary accounts of the transmission of medical knowledge from the Gods to sages, and thence to human physicians. Ayurveda therapies have varied and evolved over more than two millennia. Some scholars assert that Ayurveda originated in prehistoric times, and that some of the concepts of Ayurveda have been discovered since the times of Indus Valley Civilization and earlier. Ancient Ayurveda treatises also taught surgical techniques, including rhinoplasty, perineal lithotomy, the suturing of wounds, and the extraction of foreign objects. Globalized and modernized practices derived from Ayurveda traditions are a type of complementary or alternative medicine. Ayurveda medicine is considered pseudoscientific. Other researchers consider it a protoscience, or trans-science system instead.
