The Battle of Hastings was fought on October 14, 1066 between the Norman-French army of William, the Duke of Normandy, and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson, beginning the Norman conquest of England. The English army was composed of infantry and had few archers, whereas the invading force was half infantry, the rest split equally between cavalry and archers. Harold died late in the battle, although accounts in the various sources are contradictory. Harold's death left the English forces leaderless, many of them fled, but the soldiers of the royal household gathered around Harold's body and fought to the end. Cassell's Illustrated History of England, 1865 (cropped and cleaned).
