Artist's Description

In 1346, England was embroiled in the Hundred Years' War with France. In order to divert his enemy Philip VI of France appealed to David II of Scotland to attack the English from the north in order to create a second front for the English. The Battle of Neville's Cross took place to the west of Durham, England, on October 17, 1346. The two armies clashed on the narrow ridge close to Neville's Cross where the invaders found themselves greatly disadvantaged by the terrain. Arrayed into three "battles", the English center was led by Neville, while Percy commanded the right, and the Archbishop of York the left. Advancing onto heights to the north of the English, David also deployed his force into three battles with himself leading the center, Douglas and the Earl of Moray the right, and Robert the High Steward the left. Despite the battle being evenly balanced for a time, the Scots were badly beaten, fled the field, and their King captured and imprisoned. The Hundred Years' War was a seri...
