The Battle of the Standard took place on August 22, 1138. English forces under William le Gros repelled a Scottish army led by King David I of Scotland. King David had entered England for two reasons to support his niece Matilda's claim to the English throne and to enlarge his kingdom. Archbishop Thurstan of York preached that to withstand the Scots was to do God's work. The center of the English position was marked by a mast bearing a pyx carrying the consecrated host and flying the banners of the minsters of Durham, York, Beverley and Ripon.
