Description

Bed bug. Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of 2 parasitic bed bugs Cimex lectularius on fabric. The head has a pair of compound eyes (red) with small facets two antennae, and piercing mouthparts. It has six walking legs a broad, flat, body, and no wings. A regular diet of blood is necessary for bed bugs to reach maturity. A parasite of humans this species feeds at night and after a blood meal the body becomes quite swollen. The bite of a bed bug produces swellings on the skin. It is painful and may be lasting in some cases. During the day the bed bug lives in mattresses floors or in tears in furniture. Magnification x10 at 6x7cm size.
