Description
Bee pollinating a marigold (Calendula officinalis) flower. Infusions made from the flowers are used locally to treat wounds, as they have an anti-inflammatory effect, and reduce pain. They are also of use when applied to bee or wasp stings. Drinking an infusion of marigold flowers helps to reduce a high temperature, as it promotes perspiration. As well as these medicinal uses, the flowers can be made into a colourant for butter, and marigold oil can be used as an ingredient in perfumes. The petals of the flowers are edible, and can be used to brighten salads. It is a popular garden plant as well, due to the long life of its flowers.
