Artist's Description

When threatened, Oplophorus gracilirostris (a deep sea shrimp) emits a cloud of bioluminescent material which glows brightly for several seconds. The prawn swims away, hoping to temporarily distract potential predators. This individual was captured in a trawl between 600 and 1000 meters depth in the Gulf of Mexico, 2015.
