In 1963, folksinger Joan Baez, led a crowd of 300,000 in singing "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial during the civl rights March on Washington. President Johnson used the phrase in a speech delivered after the violent Bloody Sunday attacks on civil rights demonstrators during the Selma to Montgomery marches, thus legitimizing the protest movement. The Black Panther Party was a revolutionary black nationalist and socialist organization founded by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton in 1966.
