Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts (September 30 1832 - November 14, 1914) was a British soldier who was one of the most successful commanders of the 19th century. In 1899 Roberts took command of British forces in the Second Boer War. His appointment was a response to a string of defeats in the early weeks of the war and was accompanied by the dispatch of huge reinforcement. He ended a succession of British defeats, and capturedBloemfontein, capital of the Orange Free State Republic in March 1900. He then annexed the state as the Orange River Colony in May 1900, and took the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria. He gave way to Horatio Herbert Kitchener as Commander-in-Chief in South Africa in November 1900.
