Description
Bond paper by SEM. Two components are clearly visible cellulose fibers and granular 'filler' particles. Materials such as chalk (fine calcium carbonate), china clay (caolinite), or fine silicate (particles 4 to 15 micrometers in diameter) are used as fillers to adjust the density or improve surface and optical properties of the resulting paper. This paper is still too porous and would not be suitable to reproduce fine-screen artwork. A uniform application of mineral coating characterizes printing papers. In contrast, sanitary absorbent papers are free of fillers and the cellulose matrix is very open. Enhanced SEM. Image width 640 micrometers. Magnification 156x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
