Artist's Description
Bone growth in hands. Computer enhanced digitized color X-ray of the bone growth of a male human hand at different ages. At left, at two-and-a-half years of age, wide spaces occur between the finger joints of carpal (palm), metacarpal (first finger joint), & phalanges (finger) bones. In such youth these spaces consist of cartilage unseen on X-ray, with proper bone calcification occurring only in the middle of long bones. At center, at six-and-a-half years of age, calcification has progressed & the spaces between joins have narrowed. In the 19 year-old adult hand (at right), the finger long bones are fully calcified to their extremities, & the joints have closed.
