Description
Digitally-colorized scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicts a grouping of numerous Gram-negative, anaerobic, Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, which had been derived from a pure culture. This pathogenic organism is responsible for causing the illness Lyme disease, a zoonotic, vector-borne ailment, transmitted to humans by way of a tick bite. B. burgdorferi belongs to a group of bacteria called spirochetes, whose appearance resembles a coiled spring. B. burgdorferi bacteria can infect several parts of the body, producing different symptoms at different times. Not all patients with Lyme disease will have all symptoms, and many of the symptoms can occur with other diseases as well. If you believe you may have Lyme disease, it is important that you consult your health care provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.
