Description
Light micrograph of the bread mold Rhizopus nigricans. The threadlike structures (hyphae) anchor the fungus and absorb nutrients. The dark, sac- like bodies in this image are sporangia which contain spores. When the spores are mature, they are released as the walls of the sporangium crack and disintegrate. Spores that alight on a favorable medium will germinate quickly producing a network of hyphal threads. Rhizopus occurs commonly on many types of food and decaying matter.
