Description
Bridge at Otowi, New Mexico, USA. During the Manhattan Project of 1943-45, this bridge was on the only road linking the top-secret Los Alamos laboratory to the outside world. The laboratory housed the research into making the first nuclear bombs. All traffic, including scientists arriving to work at Los Alamos, had to cross the Rio Grande river by this bridge. The road seen here led from Los Alamos to the nearest town, Santa Fe, some 35 miles away. The nearest railroad station was a further 10 miles away at Lamy. Compare with a modern view, image T162/080.
