Description
Moth camouflage. An unidentified species of "prominent" moth (family Notodontidae) resting on the bark of a broken branch. This insect mimics bark or brown leaves, in its body markings and brown body coloration. Markings on its wings break up the moth's body outline, while also resembling cracks in the bark or the veins of a dead leaf. The behavior of this moth is to remain quite still. By blending in with its environment, this moth gains protection against predators. "Prominent" moths are so-called because of the highly colored caterpillars they produce. Photographed in France.
