Description
Color-enhanced Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of an adult female castor bean tick (Ixodes ricinus) sitting on a blade of grass. Clearly visible are the serrated lancets with which the tick bores into its host's skin to suck blood. This European species of tick feeds on large mammals, including humans; it can transmit both bacterial and viral pathogens such as the causative agents of Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis. Magnification is 551, or 37x at 10 cm wide.
