Description
The Atlas Coelestis of Andreas Cellarius was an eclectic group of astronomical charts and diagrams, displaying many different and often contradictory views of the heavens. It was partly a historical reference work, explaining the planetary theories of Ptolemy, Copernicus and Tycho. Its elaborately designed celestial maps were essentially artistic variations on a theme. This plate offers a novel view of the earth, the Pacific and Antarctic regions, as if seen through a starry sphere, from a point in deep space. Undeniably ingenious, its practical use for astronomers is highly doubtful.
