Description
Chemoreceptors (taste buds) reside deep inside the crevices on the surface of the tongue. Chemoreceptors, anchored in the lining of the tongue composed of epithelium, are responsible for sweeping the circulating saliva for dissolved food molecules and sending nerve impulses to the brain for interpretation. A dense layer of connective tissue supports nerves and circulatory vessels.
