Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of chicory pollen grains. Pollen carries the plants male genetic material and is known to trigger allergies in people. Chicory is in the Asteraceae family. Its blue flowers open only in the mornings during the summer, and its low growing rosette of leaves are dandelion-like. The close relationship between chicory and dandelion can also be seen in their pollen. The chicory roots can be dried, ground, and used with coffee grounds. The young, pale leaves are also used in salads. They grow in calcareous soil. Magnification 2300x.
