Artist's Description

A tapestry of Chinese astronomers consulting a mounted globe. Made by Beauvais Tapestry Manufactory; after designs by Guy-Louis Vernansal, French, Beauvais, about 1697 - 1705. The Chinese emperor is at center with his hand on the world, while a German Jesuit priest, Father Schall von Bell, is taking a measurement on the globe. He attained a high rank in the Qing court through his knowledge of Western astronomy and headed the Imperial Astronomical Bureau. The large globe, telescope, and the ecliptic armillary sphere depicted survive today in the Beijing observatory.
