Description
In June 2004, a bright naked-eye comet graced the night sky. Known as C/2001 Q4 (NEAT), the comet was visible to the unaided eye as a fuzzy haze with a narrow tail. Here the comet passes by M44, the Beehive open cluster in Cancer. While Comet Q4 was millions of miles away when it passed Earth, M44 is more than 500 light years distant. This photo was taken atop the nearly 14,000-foot-high summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii. It shows the comet, M44 and the 8-meter, Gemini North Telescope dome.
