Artist's Description
Cometary globule CG4. This is a large cloud of gas and dust that glows as the hydrogen gas it contains is ionized by radiation from hot young stars within and around it. The cloud is around 1.5 light years across and eight light years long. The dense head (center) is opaque but the gas around it glows through ionization by external stars, and by reflected starlight. Stellar winds and radiation pressure are slowly destroying the globule, although more stars will form in it before it is gone. It lies some 1300 light years from Earth in the constellation Puppis. The edge-on galaxy ESO 257-19 (upper left) is some 100 million light years more distant. Image taken by the four meter Victor M Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American University, Chile.
