Description
Designed by the German mathematician Johann Doppelmayr, this chart clearly shows the southern group of exotic constellations, the Indian, the Peacock, the Toucan, etc. and some that did not become permanent, such as the Royal Oak and the Fly. The views of the European observatories, including Greenwich, indicate that the map was aimed at pleasing an educated lay public, rather than for use by professional astronomers.
