A miniature showing the construction of the Tower of Babel, which accompanies Rudolf von Ems's retelling of the Old Testament story. As told in Genesis, the Babylonians wanted to build a tower "with its top in the heavens," an ambition that displeased God, who sabotaged construction by giving the builders so many languages that they couldn't talk to each other. King Nimrod, at left, supervises construction, while laborers use typical medieval building techniques, including a pulley and winch system to hoist bricks and stones. Also shown here is wooden scaffolding with beams inserted into the walls through put holes. Two rows of put holes are visible below the windows, showing earlier stages of the scaffolding. This illustration was made in Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany, and dates from about 1400 - 1410, with addition in 1487. Tempera colors, gold, silver paint, and ink on parchment.
