Description
Illustration of a cornual/interstitial ectopic pregnancy. In an interstitial ectopic pregnancy the fetus grows outside of the uterine cavity. If the pregnancy goes undetected the fallopian tube will eventually burst, causing hemorrhaging into the mother's abdomen, which may be fatal. Surgery is performed to remove the fetus and repair or remove the Fallopian tube. In the image shown, at left is the entire uterus with a box around the area where the fetus is growing. At right is a close up of the fetus in the passageway to the fallopian tube.
