Blue-green algae or cyanobacteria, collecting against a rocky shoreline on Lake Okeechobee, Fl. Cyanobacteria is one of earth’s oldest living organisms and dates back 3.5 billion years. Exposure to this bacteria can sicken humans, pets and aquatic life. It can also cause gastrointestinal problems and is known to cause tumors and is often associated with liver cancer. The current algal bloom covers 90% of the surface of Lake keechobee which is 730 squaare miles. It was caused by heavyspring rains and the mixing of phosphorus and nitrogen from farmoand fertilizers.
