"King Harold Was Killed" The death of Harold as portrayed in the Bayeux Tapestry. Harold II (1022-1066) was the last Anglo-Saxon King of England. His death at the Battle of Hastings, in October 1066 against Norman invaders led by William Duke of Normandy, is depicted in a panel of the Bayeux Tapestry. He is shown gripping an arrow that has struck him in the eye. Some historians have questioned whether this is Harold or if he is the figure lying to the right beneath a horse's hooves. The Bayeux Tapestry, nearly 70 meters long, is an embroidered linen cloth narrating William the Conqueror's rise to the throne of England culminating in the Battle of Hastings.
